2022: Challenges, Change, Collaboration and Creativity.

2023 is almost upon us. But before the year’s end, we wanted to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for your support in 2022, Fleetwood’s 50th year in business.

The past year has certainly been one of extremes right across the sector. Like everyone, we’ve had to navigate our share of challenges. But these have been balanced by some awesome – and, in several cases, award-winning – achievements for our clients. There’s much to be grateful for.

During the past 12 months, the Fleetwood team has collaborated with Local Council’s, Tiers 1’s, Landscape Architects and Developers to deliver 105 inspiring Play, Shade and Access structures. It’s a significant addition to the Australian outdoor landscape. As the Summer holidays begin, it’s great to know these structures will be enjoyed by communities everywhere from south-east Queensland, northern NSW, Greater Sydney and the ACT to Melbourne, regional Victoria and the very heart of the Adelaide CBD.

At a business level, we’ve seen a steady transition towards larger and more complex projects in the public domain. This is something we welcome, as it’s always been where we’ve been able to add maximum value for our clients. The shift has been accompanied by a deliberate investment to upskill both our inhouse teams and processes to help make it all happen.

One of the other very welcome trends we’ve seen in 2022 is a significant uplift in early design engagement – especially across Government, Greenfield Development, Public Space and Infrastructure projects. There’s no doubt the sooner we’re involved in projects, the greater the value we can bring for our clients. So early engagement is something we’re committed to developing even further in 2023, and beyond.

Internally, we’ve made some other important structural changes too. Perhaps most noticeably, Fleetwood has recently welcomed a new Head of Delivery, John Dahdah, and our first-ever Head of People & Culture, Marika Kelly. Two great new additions who are already helping us do what we’ve always loved to do – create inspiring community structures – but even better.

As Directors, there’s much to look forward to in 2023. Our current delivery pipeline includes many iconic large-scale outdoor structures – including our longest ever clear-span bridge and first-ever swing bridge – with other major projects soon to be added. We also have a new website on the way. So, watch this (outdoor) space!

Thank you again for your continued support. Wishing you a safe and peaceful holiday season. See you in 2023.

Designing structures for sensitive sites. | Fleetwood Urban

“Life would be easy for designers if you could just ignore the cultural and environmental sensitivities of a site,” chuckles Fleetwood Creative & Technical Lead, Mark Jol. “You could just bulldoze everything and start from a blank page! But that’s not how we do things at Fleetwood.”
Turning screen time into green time. | Fleetwood Urban

The outdoors. It used to be the only place Aussie kids wanted to spend their time. But the digital age has surrounded us with technology at every turn. Screen time is up and green time is down – and the risks are very real.
