Margaret mahy Family Playground, Christchurch, NZ

The Margaret Mahy Family Playground was opened in December 2015. This project was developed as a post-earthquake development to revitalise the inner city centre for Christchurch for the people of Christchurch. Playrope has been involved from the concept design, through to design development and recently the installation of all the play equipment.

The design initiative has involved the local children of the region to assist in the design concept and development. The overall project is part of the major city rebuild in Christchurch under the Avon River Precinct. Since opening, it has proved a huge success to the community, offering custom equipment never seen before and providing a public open space that brings a smile to every child who comes to play!

The playspace offers giant slides, giant spinners, a 40m double racing cableway and some huge custom net climbers. The water play area features a splashpad and a kinetic water play where the kids pump, tip, spin and redirect water to various channels and troughs. Fantastic for creative and interactive play.

The project has been designed to provide equipment and play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities while offering a place where everyone can play together, all representive and respectful of the local area and culture. This project, is now one of the largest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere spanning over a city block and with over $20million investment, this is a positive outcome for a tragic event. Stage 2 works are currently under construction, and is opening Spring 2016.
