Bongaree on Bribie Island is a bustling tourist destination off the Queensland coast. Despite Bribie Island’s name, it is connected to the mainland and is accessible by vehicles. Being a relatively small community with a large tourist industry, the cycleway and pedestrian thoroughfares are an intrinsic part of the commuting network.

As part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s commitment to upgrade and maintain the infrastructure, the Shared Pedestrian and Cycleway Bridge on Foley St needed to be replaced. Council contracted Fleetwood Urban due to our extensive experience in successfully completing environmentally-friendly and visually appealing projects in other iconic tourist destinations.

The 12m-long shared bridge provides a major connection within the township. It links a camp and caravan grounds to the shopping centre and beachfront. The bridge encourages commuters to explore the township by bike or on foot. It helps to minimise the use of cars and their resulting pollution in this pristine setting, which is a benefit to all residents and tourists.

From design to construction, Fleetwood Urban were aware of its responsibility to the environment and our promise to enhance an area through design and functionality. At a generous 2.5m-wide and with line markings to direct pedestrians and cyclists, safety was a priority throughout the design stage. The bridge was built to comply with Australian Standard 2156 so that all members of the community could safely cross it with confidence and it would last for generations.

The first stage of the project was to demolish and remove the existing dilapidated bridge completely. To minimise inconvenience to the town, the new Hot Dip Galvanised steel bridge was pre-fabricated off-site while the foundations were prepared. The bridge was then lifted on to the reinforced concrete abutments using a Franna Crane. The Micromesh Fibre reinforced deck was then fitted. The handrail was powder-coated in a dark gloss finish to blend in with the immediate surroundings.

The materials used in construction have the ability to withstand the harsh environment of the sunny Queensland coastline and provide the community with a long-lasting, cost-effective structure.

Fleetwood Urban is confident we have designed and constructed a safe bridge that connects the community and fits beautifully into this iconic beachside landscape.
