Fleetwood Urban were engaged by the Northern Beaches Council after winning a competitive bid under LGP308.2 to replace an ageing and condemned Pedestrian Access Stairway in Avalon, NSW.
The existing Steel & Timber structure was removed as well as the degraded concrete footings, ready to accept the replacement Stairway.
Given the tight working environment, steep rock face and powerlines directly overhead, Fleetwood Urban’s internal Design Studio designed and engineered a lightweight and extremely durable FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) system offering a 100+ year Design Life and minimal maintenance for Council ensuring the new structure would service the local community for generations to come. This material choice also helps to combat the salty corrosive environment of the Northern Beaches that destroys many steel structures in the area.
New mass concrete footings were poured and the new FRP structure, drafted, fabricated and installed by our skilled in-house Teams, was delivered in just under two weeks. Traffic and Pedestrian Management was vital to this project’s safety and success as the Stairway links two major vehicular traffic routes and sees a high volume of local walkers.
The finished product exceeds Council’s expectations and will ensure the local community has a safe and lasting access-way avoiding one of the most hazardous intersections in the area.
Once again, Fleetwood are extremely happy to have provided the Northern Beaches Council with a painless and enjoyable experience and reinstated a crucial pedestrian link for the local community.
